Best free VPN for torrenting: why free is the wrong tool here

This page will not give you a list, and the reason is that the free tiers which exist are structurally poor at this particular job. Explaining why takes less space than a ranking would and is more useful, because the limits involved are published by the providers themselves rather than discovered by testing.

Why free tiers and peer-to-peer fit badly

  1. Free tiers cap data, and torrents are large. A free plan measured in gigabytes per month is spent by a single download. That is not a flaw in the free plan; it is what makes it a free plan.
  2. Free tiers restrict the server list. Peer-to-peer traffic is permitted on a subset of a provider's servers, and free tiers offer a subset of the list. The two subsets frequently do not overlap.
  3. Speed is throttled by design. hide.me publishes restricted speeds on its free plan on its own pricing page. A throttled connection and a large transfer are a poor combination.
  4. The failure mode is silent. If the tunnel drops mid-transfer, the client carries on over the ordinary connection and nothing tells you. This is what a kill switch is for, and it is the setting most often missing from free mobile apps.

What the exposure actually is

BitTorrent is a public protocol: everyone in a swarm sees everyone else's address, which is how the swarm works. Monitoring firms join swarms and log those addresses, and that log is where enforcement notices come from. A VPN changes which address is logged, and changes nothing else about the process.

Which means the question is not really which VPN is fastest. It is whether the tunnel stays up, whether anything leaks around it, and what the provider retains. Those are the three things worth reading about, and the third is on each provider's own policy page.

What the paid options print

The providers in this index that publish a position on peer-to-peer traffic do so on their own domains, and the price index shows what each charges, on what term, and what it renews at. CyberGhost publishes a dedicated torrenting page and prints $1.99 a month on a 26-month plan renewing at $51.74 a year.

This site does not rank providers on their suitability for infringing copyright, and downloading material you have no licence for is unlawful in every market it covers. The pages here describe the mechanism; they do not recommend a method.

Common questions

Is there a good free VPN for torrenting?
Free tiers cap data, restrict servers and throttle speed, all of which fit badly with large peer-to-peer transfers. The limits are published by the providers themselves.
Will a VPN make torrenting anonymous?
It changes the address the swarm sees. It fails if the tunnel drops, if traffic leaks, or if the provider retains connection records.
Which providers allow peer-to-peer?
Several state a position on their own pages, which this site links rather than paraphrases.
