Best VPN for expats: choosing a subscription you will keep for years
An expat VPN is a long subscription rather than a short one, which changes which number matters. You will still be abroad when the introductory term ends, so the renewal is the price of this decision and the headline is only the price of getting started.

Choosing for a long stay
- Confirm servers in your home country. This is the whole requirement and it is on the provider's own location page, not in any comparison table. Every provider in this index sells locations in the major expat origin countries.
- Check apps for what you actually took. A laptop and a phone are universal. A tablet, a streaming stick and a router are not, and the router option is what covers everything at once in a flat abroad.
- Compare on the renewal. You will be renewing. In this index the renewal ranges from close to the intro price to nearly four times it, on providers whose headlines look identical.
- Check the payment method survives the move. A card that expires or a bank that changes country can end a subscription at the moment it is least convenient, which is a mundane point and the one that actually catches people.
Why the usual advice is the wrong way round
Most expat VPN advice ranks providers by which streaming services they currently unblock. That changes constantly and cannot be verified from a page like this one, so it is not what this site publishes.
What can be verified is the money. Private Internet Access autorenews at $69.81 every three years, which is close to its intro; NordVPN renews at $139.08 a year against an intro of $94.23 for twenty-seven months. For a subscription you expect to keep for the length of a posting, that difference is the decision.
The uncontroversial use case
Reaching your own bank, your own broadcaster and your own government portal from abroad involves no rights question at all: you are an existing customer whose address has changed. That is the ordinary expat requirement and every provider here can meet it.
The licensed-catalogue question is a different one, and it is a matter of a service's terms rather than the law in the markets this site covers. The pages here say which, and do not pretend the two are the same.
Common questions
- Which VPN is best for living abroad?
- The one with reliable servers in your home country and apps for your devices. Because it is a multi-year subscription, compare the renewal rather than the intro price.
- Can I keep using my home bank abroad?
- Usually, with a home-country server, if the bank is checking the address. If it has flagged the account or wants a domestic phone number, that is a support call.
- Is it legal?
- Using a VPN is lawful in the markets this site covers. Reaching an account you already hold raises no rights question.
