VPN Australia: the printed price, the prepaid term and the renewal
Australian VPN buying has one local wrinkle and one universal one. The local wrinkle is distance: a connection routed through a distant server is a slower connection, so the server list matters more here than it does in London or New York. The universal one is the same everywhere, and it is the reason this site exists: the monthly figure on the sign-up page is the price of a prepayment, and the renewal behind it is usually several times larger.

Choosing a provider from Australia
- Check the Australian server list on the provider's page. Latency is decided by where the servers are, and every provider publishes its location list on its own domain. That is a page to read before a price table, not after.
- Read the price in the currency it is printed in. This index quotes USD because these pages print USD. An Australian card will be converted, and the bank's rate is part of the real price.
- Decide the term before the provider. The cheap headlines here all require two to three years. That is the same trade everywhere; the question is whether you would keep it that long.
- Check the renewal. Nine of the eleven priced providers renew at a multiple of the headline, and the renewal is printed on the same page.
The prices Australian buyers are choosing between
The index is quoted in USD and the providers in it are the ones that sell into Australia: the printed entry prices run from $1.79 to $6.00 a month with a median of $2.69. Nothing about that band is Australia-specific, and no provider in the index prints an Australian-only price on the pages read here.
What is worth knowing locally is that the cheapest headlines are the longest commitments, and that a provider chosen for its Australian server list may not be the provider at the bottom of the price column. The table shows both so the trade is visible rather than assumed.
Why the renewal matters more at a distance
A VPN bought for speed is a VPN you will keep, which makes the renewal the number that decides the real cost rather than a footnote about year four. A three-year prepayment at $1.79 a month is $69.81 up front and $69.81 every three years after; an annual renewal at $99.99 is a different shape entirely.
Both are quoted from the providers' own pages in the table, with the date they were read.
Common questions
- Is a VPN legal in Australia?
- Yes. Using a VPN is lawful in Australia. What you do through it is governed by the same law as anything else you do online, and this site takes no position beyond that.
- Which VPN has Australian servers?
- Every provider in this index sells Australian locations on its flagship plan; the location list is on each provider's own page, linked beside its price.
- Are these prices in Australian dollars?
- No, they are the USD figures the providers printed. Your card will be converted at your bank's rate.
