Reading a free tier honestly
- Find the published limit. A real free tier states what it restricts: data per month, connection speed, number of locations or number of devices. hide.me publishes a free plan with restricted speeds, eight locations and one connection, printed on the same page as its paid plans.
- Check whether Canadian locations are in the free tier. Free tiers usually offer a fraction of the location list. If a Canadian exit is the reason you want it, that is the thing to confirm before signing up.
- Ask what the provider sells. A provider with a paid plan has a business model you can see. That is the meaningful difference between a free tier and a free app.
- Price the upgrade before you need it. The free tier is the on-ramp to the paid plan beside it, and that paid plan is priced on the same prepaid-term logic as everything else in this index.

Proton VPN is also the one provider in this index whose paid prices could not be quoted at all: its pricing page fills the figures in the browser and serves $0.00 placeholders, so it appears in the catalogue with that fact on the record rather than with a number.
What the paid plans beside them print
hide.me prints $2.69 a month on a 26-month plan billed at $69.99, quoted from its own page. Windscribe prints $5.75 a month billed at $69 every twelve months. Those are the two upgrade paths a Canadian buyer on either free tier is actually looking at.
Against the rest of the index, the first is at the cheap end and requires the usual multi-year prepayment, and the second is a one-year commitment at roughly twice the monthly rate. Neither is a surprise once the term is read.
